The Facts about Rabies in Bali
==Society rule is needed to overcome rabies =

Dog bites cases in Bali, once again get the public attention even from abroad. In 2008, the case appeared for the first time in southern part of Badung regency. From year to year, the cases caused by dog bitessignificantly increase. Until the middle of 2015, recorded of 220 cases and have been spreading to 156 villages in Bali. It was delivered by head of animal health division in Bali provincial Husbandry and Animal Health Agency, Drh. I Ketut Gede Nata Kesuma, MMA, in an informal discussion titled “Let’s save Bali from Rabies”, that was held by Bali Provincial Public Relations bureau, took place in Warung Tresni Denpasar, on Thursday (23/7). Based on data from Bali Provincial Husbandry and Animal Health Agency, currently there are 500 000 dogs population in Bali, and 5% of them are well treated by their owner. 70% dog population are owned but wandering around the street, and 25% dog population are wild. Bali provincial government through husbandry and animal health agency had done some efforts to control the rabies cases through some effort namely vaccination, education, sterilization, as well as elimination. Especially, elimination just done in rabies infected area, and the operation is targeted and directed. On the other side, Head of Bali Provincial Husbandry and Animal Health, Putu Sumantra added that the elimination does not mean as dogs slaughters, because the action is very selective in target.  “The action just targets the wild dogs,” said him. He also demanded the society support for government’s program in eradicating the rabies virus. Especially for animal lovers foundations, he demanded theirs supports in educating society about how caring for dogs, so it will be protected from rabies and handling rabies indicated dogs as well.
Meanwhile, head of Bali Provincial Health Agency, dr. Ketut Suarjaya, said from 2008 to 2015 the rabies cases in Bali has increased approximately 20 000 persons with an average 125 cases of dog bite. The total deaths are 159 victims. Furthermore, he explained anticipation effort for reducing the cases. Provincial government has coordinated with districts government in providing free anti rabies vaccine (VAR). The program has spent more than 100 billion to buy vaccines in 2015. So he really deplored people who has underestimated the dog bite cases. “If we are bitten by dog, we just looking for a VAR, but in reality VAR is not a solution to eradicate rabies,” said him. According to him, the most important is resolving the main problem, which is educating dog owners or society. Society should be socialized and educated about the danger of rabies as well as the process of virus spreading in our body. “As much as VAR provided will not enough if societies don’t have the awareness of the disease,” added him. He also explained the bite position of infected dog in our body influences when the victim will die.“The virus will attack our brain in a way flow through our bloodstream, and victim will not survive  if the virus reach our brain. Even more there is no cure,” concluded him.
Meanwhile, head of Indonesian Veterinarian Association (PDHI), Drh. Made Restiati said that all veterinarians in Bali have made serious effort to overcome the rabies spread in Bali. They have collaborated with government to vaccinate and sterilize wilds dogs. However, she deplored the lack of society rule in succeeding the rabies eradication. “People seemed fighting the government efforts, even we know the danger of that virus is,” added her. She expected people could support the government through understanding the applicable rules. “If you  want your dog not to be eliminated, so keep them at home,” stated her. Agus, the representative of one animal lover foundation in Bali called Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), said that the association has done some effort to help government, such as vaccination, targeted elimination, as well as educated the dog lovers about the dangers of rabies and the way to overcome it.
Closing the discussion, head of Bali Provincial PR Agency, Dewa Gede Mahendra Putra appreciated and thanked to all participants especially media who had given the solution and also had given a space to communicate in effort to overcome rabies. He expected good communication and coordination among all elements as well as do not blaming each other, will accelerate the rabies prevention effort. .”Don’t let the rabies case defaces the Bali tourism image, because the main income for Balinese people is from tourism sector,” said him.
