Vice- governor Requested the Community to be Aware of the Spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Since the biggest localization in Asia, Doly which is located at Surabaya were closed, it is predicted would be influenced commercial sex workers (PSK) that wanted to operate their business in Bali considering the distance between Bali and Surabaya were relatively near. The increase of commercial sex workers existence feared would be impacted to spread of sexual transmitted diseases among community. That was stated at scientific seminar held by Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University in order to celebrate the 52th of Family Agency’s anniversary at Wiswa Sabha Utama building on Saturday (8/2).

            The vice-governor that opened the seminar was also reminding Bali community to be aware towards the spread of Sexual Transmitted Infection in Bali. Sudikerta who served as executive director of AIDS Prevention Committee of Bali Province affirmed that Sexual Transmitted Infection were highly related to HIV transmission, in which both diseases would be widely impacted to health and social-economic issues in many countries including Indonesia.

            He described that Sexual Transmission Infection increases the risk of HIV transmission up to three to five-fold through sexual activity. Moreover, Sexual Transmitted Infection with wound would increases HIV transmission until 300-fold. The higher Sexual Transmitted Infection numbers among community shows the higher risk of HIV spread. Based on integrated biological and behavioral surveys implemented by Bali government every 3 months showed that Sexual Transmitted Infection cases tended to increase since 2007 until 2011. Syphilis cases among transvestites were increased from 27% to 28%, homosexual from 4% became 13%, meanwhile injecting drug users from 1% to 3%. On the other hand, females of commercial sex worker who infected by syphilis were about 7, 25% and HIV portion reached 20, 3%. Until December 2013, HIV/AIDS cases in Bali number extend to 8.563 cases with details about 4.520 HIV cases and 4.043 cases of AIDS.  

            According to dean Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. dr. Putu Astawa, SP.OT, M.Kes, FICS, the seminar aimed to inform knowledge of sexual health towards the community and college students. This seminar with theme “Current Understanding of Sexual Transmitted Infection” was presenting three expert speakers. They were Dr. Nyoman Wirya, Dr. IGK Darmada, Sp. KK and Dr. Putu Laksmi Anggari Duarsa, Sp. KK.
